I was walking down memory lane at Newtown one afternoon when I decided to have a cup of latte from my favourite coffee joint, Campos Coffee. The place was bustling with activity just like it was since my last visit two years ago. There are two things I like about the coffee there. Its rich consistent taste as the beverage is made from specialty beans and the personal touch added by the lively baristas there to individual cups of coffee by creating coffee art.
Looking at the pattern created on my latte certainly puts a smile to my face. It will be a double joy to be greeted by coffee art especially in the grey winter season prior to savouring the richness of the powerful hot drink.
Coffee art has become more popular in cafés these days as it is delightfully accepted by patrons as an added bonus to purchasing a cup of coffee. It is one way for baristas to give that added touch in customer service excellence to their patrons in the hope that they will keep coming back for more.
Why make coffee into an art form? Today’s coffee mirrors the obsession of coffee through the centuries, from the way it is roasted to the way it is being brewed. Coffee baristas today have taken their skills to a new level- making coffee into an edible masterpiece.
Awesome huh?
It all started in Italy where baristas experimented with “rosetta” patterns that resembled a flower. This has slowly progressed into more complex, intricate patterns. This art has caught on and made its way to America which led to its publicity. Its contagious effect has gradually caught on and its style is emulated by baristas all over the world. The result is a stunning masterpiece on the smooth canvas of rich creamy milk and your favourite coffee, producing a striking white and brown contrast.
I have sourced out this youtube which I thought gives a good demonstration of the art of coffee-creating patterns by using just milk, chocolate sauce and the right tool.
Here is a list of cafes in Sydney that offer that added personal touch in the form of coffee art:
1. Cockle Bay Wharf
Shop 104-105, Darling Harbour
2. Mr Espressio
4 Wentworth Avenue, Darlinghurst;
3. Campos Coffee
Newtown
4. Simple Origin
60-64 Reservoir St
Surrey Hills
5. Mecca
67 King Street
