Maki San is an eatery with several outlets in Singapore that serves a selection of prepared-on-order sushi and tempura dishes. The joint is small and basic, just nice for small families, a few friends or couples.
Its sushi selection goes by creative names such as Lucky Roll, Tom Yummy and Child’s Play. Each sushi roll is served in a cute patterned packaging that looks like a cardboard pencil case. Below is a list of my findings:
Selection
For a small establishment, Maki San’s selection of sushi, salad and tempura snacks on offer is sufficient. One can choose a variety of 6 types of sushi with varied filling, 2 DIY sushi rolls with your choice of essentials, sprinkle and sauce, 2 DIY salad with your choice of base, sprinkle, essentials and sauce, 6 types of salad options and 8 tempura snack options.
Taste and Portion
I took away a sushi roll option from Maki San called Salmon Says which comprised nori wrap, Japanese white rice, smoked salmon, avocado, prawn roe, shredded carrot, shredded cucumber and wasabi mayo sauce. The sushi roll had been cut into portions which were smaller than other sushi rolls I have eaten. I was very disappointed with the portion size. Like I mentioned, they were far too small than the average sushi. It wasn’t filling or satisfying. Since the sushi was bland, I had to spread tuna mixed with hummus which was readily available from my own fridge to enhance the flavour.
Cost
I find that the cost of sushi and salad bowl on offer at Maki San over-priced compared to other sushi outlets in Singapore. Each sushi roll costs between S$8.90 and S$13.90 while a salad bowl costs between $S11.90 and S$14.90. Interestingly, each sushi comes in a cute rectangular packaging which looks like a nice present. Personally, I do not see the necessity of the rectangular box packaging which is most likely factored into the overall cost.
Verdict
Overall, I’d give an overall rating of 2 out of 5 stars for Maki San despite its speedy food preparation. Will I purchase anything from this joint again? Definitely not based on the above reasons.
