SOY SAUCE SOFT TOFU

I had my first taste of soy sauce soft tofu with bonito flakes at Yamaei Restuarant at Chatswood. The flavour was subtle and clean. It was a good appetizer as it whetted the palate.

When I came across soft tofu at the Asian section at Woolworths, I was reminded of the soy sauce tofu I had. So I got two packets and tried them at home.

The creative me wanted to make this dish a little different and balanced. So I got some broccoli flowers and grilled them for the sides.

Creative Toppings

In place of bonito flakes, which is fish flakes, I used nuts for added texture. I coarsely blended handful of walnuts and almonds in my Nutribullet and added them on top of the soft tofu. I then poured soy sauce over the nuts and tofu and let it drain along the sides.

I must say, the overall effect is visually appetizing and tasty. The grilled broccoli provides that exciting charred flavour and the coarse nuts soaked with soy sauce is an explosion of texture and flavour. Together with the soft tofu, the overall flavour is clean and subtle. The soy, nuts and grilled broccoli provide an interesting marriage of flavours that tantalise the tastebuds.

If you are after clean healthy and well-balanced dish, try this dish. You can also use crushed fish or prawn crackers to substitute the nuts.

Ingredients that go with Tofu

Tofu is packed with protein and calcium. I usually shallow fry cut pieces of tofu and add soy sauce over them to lift up the taste. Tofu is versatile as you can have it with almost dish such stir fry or noodles or as an accompaniment.

In fact fried tofu goes well with hummus. I enjoy dipping the little brown squares of tofu with Yummi Brand hummus. It’s surprisingly tasty.
